What are the benefits of celebrating and training our capacity for gratitude? Definitely celebrating Thanksgiving is a great idea. Gratitude is an emotion that expresses our appreciation for what we have, instead of emphasizing what we do not have or what we would like to have.
Numerous studies reveal that when we learn to generate gratitude, it improves our physical and emotional well-being, and we feel happier. And it is that emotions are not a biological luxury, they are not a good thing and expendable. Cultivating a grateful attitude towards life has multiple benefits: greater productivity, better physical health, better sleep, a feeling of greater happiness, greater self-esteem, better social relationships ...
It is logical: emotions leave a mark on the body, and gratitude is a very powerful positive emotion that unites us to others and invites us to enjoy the positive things that surround us.
Of course, it is not always easy for us to notice and enjoy positive things, especially when we live with them and take them for granted. Why? For two main reasons:
- Because the brain programmed to survive tends to exaggerate and memorize negative things. As we have already said throughout this book, the brain, by default, is like a velcro for the negative and like a Teflon for the positive, psychiatrist Dan Siegel tells us. For this reason, the brain must be trained positively, with a conscious and systematic effort, and for this, nothing better than introducing spaces and routines for gratitude in our lives.
- Because of hedonistic habituation, which is a mental mechanism by which we get used to good things and stop looking at them.
But even if we dedicate a specific day to give thanks for our life, let's not limit ourselves to that moment! Every day, find a gesture for gratitude: write a note, make a call, say thanks, help someone, celebrate alone or accompanied a moment of well-being.
FEELING GRATITUDE DOES NOT RESOLVE EVERYTHING, BUT IT IS DEFINITELY A POWERFUL TOOL, AND GENERALLY UNUSED, TO IMPROVE OUR HAPPINESS.
